Re: FCC going paperless
Amateur licenses have always been essentially free by law. The fees paid for testing go to the VEC. I suspect you can give it a couple of weeks and they will have a button on there somewhere to request a paper copy if it isn't there already. The state has funny ways of messing up license plates. Geo...

Re: FCC going paperless
I saw this too. It's probably been coming for some time. The FCC used to issue licenses on a paper stock printed with a pastel pattern that was unique. You needed to carry a copy of the mini license that was printed at the bottom of the page. Then the rules changed, and changed again. I remember cal...

Re: 150th Anniversary of James Maxwell's Theory
We all know about Newton and Einstein but tend to forget about Maxwell. Pity. Died at an early age of stomach cancer. Should have been eating TexMex.

Re: PL-259 Connectors
I'm sure I have some PL259's in the junk box but I'm also sure I don't have any reducers. I'd call Main Trading up in Paris. He will have some good silver plated connectors for as cheap as you can get at HamCom for about as cheap, and UPS will have it here the next day or maybe two. Their phone is 9...

Re: HRO to Texas
I was curious about the HRO progress so I checked their page. Nothing. Called and talked to a guy at one of the stores. He wasn't sure but investigated and called me back. The scoop is that they will open about the first week of February. Further, the HRO leadership had at some point approached TT a...

Re: HRO to Texas
I have not heard that TT is going away, but with all the store frontage available in the DFW area, it is likely more than a coincidence that they are opening just blocks away from the current location. HRO has a great reputation for service before and after the sale.

Battery charging with salt water
Bumped into this recently. It might be useful for a go pack or some other emergency situation. http://www.greenivative.com makes a device which is capable of charging AA, AAA, C, D batteries using salt water over magnesium anodes. Also has a USB adapter to charge any device with that interface. Pric...

Re: Christmas Party 2014
My first choice is Bulls' Pen in Sunnyvale because it is close, clean, and not too busy in weeknights. Don't over look Steak Angus. Food isn't as good, but they have space in the front of the store for a large group.

Re: FCC Report and Order on Part 97
This removes a lot of presure from folks who allow their license to lapse. Nothing mentioned though about Advanced class hams being able to get a new 2x2, so I presume they would be issued a 2x3 and then spend some money if they chose to for a KA5BC call.
